Head south from Riga to the places visitors remember longest: the Baroque splendour of Rundāle Palace, the castle at Bauska where two rivers meet, and the Hill of Crosses just across the border in Lithuania. You build your own route by choosing the stops and how long you stay at each.

A castle where two rivers meet, the Mūsa and the Mēmele, which together form the Lielupe. It combines the ruins of a Livonian Order fortress with a later residence of the Dukes of Courland, and it is among the most photogenic places in southern Latvia. Bauska is about an hour south of Riga.

A spiritual and very photogenic site about 12 km north of Šiauliai, where visitors have left crosses since the 19th century. It was bulldozed several times in the Soviet period and the crosses kept returning. Entry is free; allow 30 to 45 minutes.
