Kaunas is 266 km from Riga, about three and a half hours by car. It is Lithuania's second city, where the Nemunas and Neris rivers meet, and it was the temporary capital between the wars. The Old Town, Town Hall Square and the modernist architecture of that period, now UNESCO-listed, make it worth a day.

A castle where two rivers meet, the Mūsa and the Mēmele, which together form the Lielupe. It combines the ruins of a Livonian Order fortress with a later residence of the Dukes of Courland, and it is among the most photogenic places in southern Latvia. Bauska is about an hour south of Riga.

A Baroque residence designed by Francesco Bartolomeo Rastrelli, the architect of the Winter Palace in St Petersburg, for the Dukes of Courland. Allow at least 1.5 hours for the state rooms and the large French-style garden. It is about 80 km from Riga.

A spiritual and very photogenic site about 12 km north of Šiauliai, where visitors have left crosses since the 19th century. It was bulldozed several times in the Soviet period and the crosses kept returning. Entry is free; allow 30 to 45 minutes.
