Liepāja is on the Baltic coast about 215 km south-west of Riga, roughly three hours by car. It is known as the city where the wind is born and as Latvia's music city, with a long white beach and a lively old centre.
The landmark is the Great Amber concert hall, a glass building the colour of amber that stands by the canal. In Karosta, the former military port, you can walk to the ruins of the Northern Forts on the shore. A private driver makes a long day easy: you choose the pace and your luggage stays in the car.
